Speakers: Alexandra Holland | Experienced Business Immigration Attorney, Ogletree Deakins
Scott Decker | Of Counsel, Ogletree Deakins

The process for hiring foreign workers in the United States is increasingly complex, costly, and anxiety-inducing for both employers and employees. During this Immigration 101 session, HR practitioners will learn about the current state of the business immigration legal environment and how to approach common issues that arise when recruiting, hiring, and retaining foreign workers. Business immigration attorneys from Ogletree Deakins will discuss the basic aspects of employer compliance through the full lifecycle of recruiting, interviewing, and onboarding a foreign worker using employment-based nonimmigrant visas such as H-1B and F-1 OPT. The discussion will then turn toward an employer’s legal obligations with respect to visa renewals, dependent family members, and green card sponsorship, as well as current industry trends and best practices. Time will be allowed at the end for specific immigration-related questions.

In this session you will:

  • Discuss which questions you can ask regarding citizenship/immigration sponsorship during the recruiting and hiring process
  • Learn the common issues that arise in the process of I-9 completion and reverification and how to correct past errors
  • Review the difference between a nonimmigrant visa versus a green card, and what is required to sponsor an employee for each
